When Should You Start Pelvic Floor Therapy After Birth?

There’s no “perfect” time to start pelvic floor therapy after birth — but there are better and worse times to wait.

Many people are told to wait until their 6-week postpartum visit before addressing pelvic symptoms. While medical clearance is important, pelvic PT can often begin earlier with gentle education, breathing, mobility, and nervous system support.

Pelvic floor therapy after birth can help with:

  • Core weakness or abdominal separation

  • Pain at the incision or perineum

  • Bladder or bowel changes

  • Pelvic heaviness or pressure

  • Return to exercise safely

Early pelvic PT focuses on healing, alignment, breathing, and restoring coordination — not aggressive strengthening. Waiting too long can allow compensations to set in, which may prolong recovery.

Every birth and recovery is different. Pelvic PT meets you where you are.
